Football club continues unwanted 102-YEAR record

A football club has begun the 2024-25 season with an unwanted record.

National League side York City opened their campaign against Southend United but before a ball had been kicked, the Vanarama X account sent a gentle jibe their way.

It was pointed out that they have now spent 102 seasons in a row rooted to the bottom of the table - courtesy of their name and the order of the alphabet.

Yeovil Town are also in the same division but because O comes after E, of course, York were yet again given the unfortunate billing of being the basement dwellers.

Alongside a screenshot of the standings, Vanarama posted: 'For the 102nd season in a row @YorkCityFC are starting bottom of the table... Will they ever get a break?'

Last campaign, York fended off relegation and they will hope to repeat the same feat this year

It was not all doom and gloom ahead of their first game, however.

Last season, they successfully fought off relegation, surviving by a point as Boreham Wood, Kidderminster Harriers, Dorking Wanderers and Oxford City went down.

York will be hopeful of repeating the same trick this time around and boss Adam Hinshelwood admitted he is relishing the long campaign ahead.

'I'm really excited actually, pre-season seems to have gone on forever,' he said.

'We're happy with how that has gone, and I think we're all ready now to get the season underway. I think they have been relatively focused throughout pre-season.

'They've worked hard throughout pre-season and have got the necessary distance into the legs each week.'
