Former Liverpool defender Matip 'handed shock Premier League lifeline'

Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip has reportedly been offered a return to the Premier League amid interest from one top-flight side.

The 33-year-old, who joined the Reds from German side Schalke in 2016, left the club after spending eight years in Merseyside, back in May.

Matip has remained a free agent over the summer, despite his impressive career to date, but now has the opportunity to return to the Premier League, according to reports.

The Sun claim that West Ham are keen to sign another defender and the former Reds star is among the players being targeted with talks for a potential deal.

The Hammers saw both Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd leave on loan during the summer, which has left them somewhat short in terms of defensive cover.

Joel Matip has been a free agent since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 campaign

Julen Lopetegui's sidehave already brought in Max Kilman for £40m and Jean-Clair Todibo on loan with an option to sign him for £34.2m next summer.

Matip has been a consistent feature in Klopp's side over the last eight years and will leave the club with an impressive trophy haul.

He's won seven trophies with the Reds including a Premier League title, a Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.

Perhaps his biggest moment for Liverpool came in their Champions League final victory over Spurs in 2019, where he assisted Divock Origi for their second goal.

The club confirmed the news in a statement on their website back in May, as the defender bid farewell with an emotional message.

'It has been eight wonderful years here in Liverpool,' he said.

'I was allowed to be part of an exciting history with a great coach and an astonishing team in an extraordinary club. We have achieved great titles and have the best fans in the world.
