Former Liverpool star set to get his sole England cap 20 YEARS late

A former England international is set to receive his official England cap almost 20 years after making his only national team appearance.

A substitute appearance in England's 4-0 friendly win over Greece at Old Trafford in August 2006 saw a goalkeeper make his only outing for the Three Lions.

However, the former Liverpool shot-stopper never received the commemorative cap that typically comes with making a Three Lions appearance.

Chris Kirkland played 45 minutes of the uneventful encounter against Greece before never making another matchday squad and will be honoured at Wembley on Thursday.

The FA have invited Kirkland as a guest to England's UEFA Nations League match against Greece - the same opponent he played against - where a special presentation will take place.

Kirkland will receive his commemorative gesture that recognises he once made an appearance for the national team.

The mistake was first spotted by staff at Edge Hill University with the FA quickly moving to rectify the situation after Kirkland was made an honorary doctor of philosophy by the university.

The 43-year-old ex-Liverpool star will receive a cap with the number 1,114 that recognises his only outing in a Three Lions kit.

Kirkland previously became a Champions League winner in 2005 with Liverpool before going on to enjoy career spells at West Brom, Wigan and Doncaster amongst others.

Meanwhile, England will hope to continue their winning start to life under interim manager Lee Carsley when they host Greece.

Carsley is still very much auditioning to become Gareth Southgate's permanent successor and has started life with the national team excellently.
