Ronaldinho makes ownership leap with investment in unlikely club

Brazilian footballing icon Ronaldinho has made his first venture into ownership after investing in a relatively unknown American team.

The 44-year-old who was at one time in his illustrious career recognised as the best player in the world is now attempting to dip into the other side of the sport as he looks to become a successful owner.

Ronaldinho retired from professional football in 2018 at the age of 38 following trophy-laden spells at Barcelona, AC Milan and with the Brazil national team where he won the World Cup.

Renowned for his flair and trickery, Ronaldinho has been keen to remain in football and along with building his own e-sports team has now become an investor in Greenville Triumph SC.

The South Carolina based team was only founded in 2018 and is currently competing in the USL League One and has ambitions to play in the MLS.

However, the MLS doesn't offer a promotion/relegation system and Greenville are now hoping Ronaldinho can offer his expertise to help transform the minnows' fortunes.

Ronaldinho was sworn in as a shareholder in a fancy unveiling at the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday morning where he was also given the honour of ringing the bell to start the day's trading.

Announcing the Brazil legend's addition, Greenville Triumph and Liberty stated: 'The Greenville Triumph and Greenville Liberty today announced that global soccer icon Ronaldinho Assis has joined the club's ownership group.

'Known for his exceptional talent, creative playmaking, and illustrious career, Ronaldinho brings a wealth of soccer knowledge and an international presence to Greenville Pro Soccer (GPS).'

Commenting on his own intentions, Ronaldinho stated: 'The emphasis the Greenville Triumph and Liberty place on youth play through the boys and girls youth academy teams, and the level of competitive excellence of the Triumph professional team and Liberty pre-professional team is impressive.

'For me and our group, this is an opportunity to support soccer's growth at all ages and levels, and to be part of a community that values international presence and a unique blend of cultures.'

The move also comes at a time when the USA is ramping up preparations for the 2026 World Cup with Ronaldinho's presence helping to promote the competition.
