Aug 22, 2024

Foldable Phones

The pixel nine pro fold is here. This is Google's second generation foldable phone. But how does it stack up against the company's first gen foldable the pixel fold. Let's compare the specs to learn what sets these two phones apart. And remember specs don't tell the whole story. So subscribe to C net for the latest as we continue to test this new foldable first things. First, Google has not raised the price of its new foldable although it does still cost a pretty penny. The pixel pro fold starts at the same price as the first gen fold did $1800. 1 of the most noticeable upgrades right off the bat is the larger displays. Let's start with the one you use when the phone is closed. The cover screen, the original fold has a 5.8 inch OLED cover screen with a 60 to 120 Hertz refresh rate. While the nine pro fold has a larger 6.3 inch O lead cover screen also with a 60 to 120 Hertz refresh rate and the cover screen on the fold has a 2092 by 1080 pixel resolution at 408 PP I. While the one on the nine pro fold has a slightly higher 2424 by 1080 pixel resolution at 422 PP I. Next is the internal screen. That's the one you'll use when the phone is open. Last year's fold has a 7.6 inch o that internal screen with 120 Hertz variable refresh rate. While the nine pro fold has a larger eight inch OLED internal screen also with 120 Hertz variable refresh rate. And the internal screen on the fold has a 22 08 by 1840 pixel resolution at 380 PP I. While the one on the nine pro fold has a 2152 by 2076 pixel resolution at 373 PP I. The nine pro fold displays also have a higher peak brightness than those on last year's fold. Both the cover and internal screens have a peak brightness of 2700 knits. While the original folds cover screen had a peak brightness of 1550 minutes and the internal screen 1450 minutes. The original folds cover glass is gorilla glass V while the new phones cover and back glass is gorilla glass V to both phones also have IP X eight ratings for water resistance. Although the displays on the nine pro fold are larger, this new phone is thinner than its predecessor when closed, the nine pro fold is 0.16 millimeters thick. While the fold is 12.1 millimeters thick and one open. The new foldable is 5.1 millimeters thick. While last year's phone is 5.8 millimeters thick. Fun fact, the nine pro fold is the thinnest book style fold you can get in the US right now. Now there are even thinner foldables available outside of the US namely John mix for for or honors magic. The three the nine PRO F is also light than the original fold. 257 g versus 283. Both phones come in 256 and 512 gigabyte storage options. But while the original fold comes with 12 gigabytes of ra M, the nine pro fold gets an upgrade to 16 gigabytes. The nine pro fold has satellite connectivity so users can connect to emergency services even if they don't have regular cell signal. The original fold doesn't have this feature. The new foldable comes with android although Android 15 is right around the corner. Last year's phone came with Android 13 and both phones will get seven years of Os and security updates. The nine pro fold features Google's new tensor G four chip. While the original fold has the tensor G two chip from 2023 Google says that new G four chip combined with the upgrade and ram allows the nine pro fold to operate more efficiently and run all the latest A I features. Speaking of A I, along with this new pixel line, Google's introduced a few new ways to use Gemini, a new A I powered app called pixel Screenshots uses Gemini to make it easier for you to grab information you may need from old screenshots like the address of your airbnb for an upcoming trip or the name of a pair of tennis shoes you want to buy. This app is available on the entire pixel nine line up. So it's not exclusive to the pixel nine pro fold, but you can't currently get it on last year's. There's also a new feature called Gemini Live that allows you to have a back and forth conversation with the A I voice of your choosing. So you can say get advice on training for a marathon. Like my fellow scene edit Lexi SDI did training for a marathon is a huge commitment. So let's get you set up for success. Gemini Live requires a subscription but the nine pro fold as well as the nine pro and nine Pro Excel will get a free year of Google one A I premium. So users can access this feature. The nine pro fold also gets some new A I photo and video editing features not currently available on the original fold. Reimagine allows you to enter a prompt to transform your photo cnet's Lisa Aico used it to completely change the ground in her photo to a sandy beach. The nine PRO fold can also use A I to enhance video shot in low light or at night. Now, all of the A I features I've mentioned truly just scratch the surface of the A I functionality available on this new foldable. But hopefully you get the idea. Speaking of photos, let's talk cameras, the camera module on the first gen fold is a rectangular shape. So I'd say camera bar really is the best way to describe it. On the nine pro fold. The camera module takes the shape of a square but the fold and nine pro fold camera specs are pretty similar when it comes to the rear camera. Both phones have a triple camera system, both have a 48 megapixel wide camera with an F 1.7 lens, a 10.8 megapixel five times telephoto camera. Although the one on the nine pro fold has an F 3.1 lens or the one on the original fold has an F 3.05 lens. The ultra wide camera on the nine pro fold is 10.5 megapixels. While the one on the original fold is 10.8 megapixels. But both of the phones ultra wide cameras have an F 2.2 lens. As for taking selfies. If the phone is closed, you can use the cover screen camera, the one on the nine pro fold is 10 megapixels. Well, the one on the original fold is 9.5 megapixels and both cameras have an F 2.2 lens. If the phone is open, you can use the inner screen camera to take selfies. The one on the nine pro fold is 10 megapixels with an F 2.2 lens. While the one on the original fold is eight megapixels with an F two lens, both phones also capture four K video. I also have to point out that the nine pro fold has a very sweet new made you look feature that displays fun animations on the cover screen to help keep little one's eyes on the camera. When you're trying to take a picture of them, the animations even react when the subject of the photo is smiling, which I think is such a cool touch. This feature isn't available on the original fold right now. While the original fold has a 4821 million power box, the nine pro fold has a slightly smaller battery at 4650 milliamp power cnet found that last year's model for the most part made it through a day on a single charge. Now, it is worth noting that while a higher milliamp power rating may equate to larger battery capacity, it doesn't always result in better performance. So I'm excited to see how the new fold performs in this category. It does have that new chip that could be more power if it and compensate for the smaller battery. We'll just have to wait and see. The nine pro fold supports 45 watt wired fast charging while the original fold supports 30 watt charging. Last but not least the nine Pro fold comes in the same two colors as last year's foldable obsidian and porcelain. You can preorder the nine Pro fold now and shipping is expected in the coming weeks and thank you so much for watching.
