Howard Webb 'hosted a conference call to educate pundits on VAR'

Refereeing chiefs reportedly held a conference call featuring several leading pundits ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

Gary Neville and Alan Shearer are two of the stars said to have watched on as over 70 pundits from all major broadcasters were given a lesson in how VAR will be implemented this season.

The decision to undertake the call came after officials grew frustrated with errors made on commentary relating to refereeing decisions last season.

According to a report from The Sun, the call was hosted by PGMOL chief Howard Webb and Premier League director of operations Tony Scholes.

In addition to VAR, former Premier League match official Webb discussed the interpretations of referees and offered reminders regarding the laws of the game.

Meanwhile Scholes provided information on off-field events such as changes to the football calendar.

Similar calls have been held on an annual basis with managers of all top-flight clubs for several years, with the aim of ensuring that coaches are up to speed on the all the latest revisions to the rulebook.

However, this marks the first time that a briefing specifically for on-air talent has been held.
