Major VAR change 'is BLOCKED by Premier League bosses'

Premier League managers reportedly blocked a major VAR change from being implemented ahead of the new season.

The controversial technology has proved to be extremely divisive since its introduction into the top flight in 2019, with VAR brutally criticised by players, coaches, fans and pundits throughout its lifespan.

There is hope that a raft of improvements proposed by PGMOL in the build-up to the 2024-25 campaign will improve the system and iron out several issues.

However, when PGMOL chief Howard Webb and Premier League chief football officer Tony Scholes met with top flight bosses last month to update them on a variety of new measures, one potential change was ruthlessly shot down.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb introduced a six-point plan to improve VAR, but the measure of referees announcing and explaining VAR decisions live inside of stadiums was shot down

The report states how referees and assistants were informed this would be the new norm heading into the new season, akin to the system implemented in the MLS and at the Women's World Cup last year.

However, Premier League managers - who attended one of two regional private briefings at the start of July - were strongly against this measure, with the proposal subsequently dropped.

It is believed they thought that such a method, which was proposed to improve communication with match-going fans, would make the whole VAR process last even longer.

Managers have regularly complained that it already takes too long to reach decisions.

The report goes on to add that officials were also unhappy with the potential prospect of explaining their decisions inside stadiums, while there were certain worries about its practicality.

Scholes revealed to the BBC that there could be a pilot scheme at some point in the season regarding in-stadium announcements, but added that the PGMOL and Premier League 'don't want to put additional pressure on the referees'.

Managers were concerned that the VAR process already took too long, while Premier League referees were also uneasy about being tasked with announcing decisions live at matches

Meanwhile, although in-stadium announcements were absent, Webb's six-point plan encompassed a variety of new measures that will be on show this coming season.

The six points include: improving the clarity of threshold for VAR interventions, reducing delays to the game, enhancing supporter experience, bolstering VAR training, ensuring better transparency and communication of decisions and an ongoing education plan.

Enhancing supporter experiences will include more on-screen messaging and replays of incidents inside stadiums, while the top flight is set to provide further explanations surrounding decisions on social media.

The Premier League campaign kicks off on Friday night when Manchester United host Fulham, with Manchester City hoping to win their fifth-successive top flight title.
