Ian Wright and Roy Keane heap praise on 'busy' Angel Gomes

Ian Wright and Roy Keane heaped praise on Angel Gomes as the former Manchester United youngster made his first full Three Lions debut against Finland on Tuesday evening.

Interim head coach Lee Carsley navigated the hosts to a second consecutive victory that further strengthens his claims to be given the job on a permanent basis as Gareth Southgate's successor.

A much-changed side from England's weekend win over Ireland in Dublin saw Carsley hand Lille midfielder Gomes a first start that later paid off as he played an instrumental part in proceedings.

The 24-year-old who previously came through the youth ranks of Manchester United and England before later moving to France started alongside Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice.

Angel Gomes produced another classy showing in a Three Lions shirt on his full debut at Wembley

A classy and controlled showing from the pair lay the groundwork for England's win, with Gomes impressing in carrying out both his attacking and defensive duties to such a great extent that praise poured in for him afterwards.

Arsenal and England legend Ian Wright hailed Gomes' poise against Finland, stating on ITV after the game: 'Angel Gomes. Jack [Grealish] and Trent [Alexander-Arnold] have been spoken about.

'Seeing Gomes in that midfield, constantly on the move. His touch of the ball.

Ex-Man United captain Roy Keane similarly gushed over Gomes' performance, describing the flair midfielder as 'busy'.

Wright further claimed: 'He's [Gomes] constantly available,' with Keane adding: 'There's great options. There will probably be a bit of a headache for him.'

Gomes previously only made 10 senior appearances at Old Trafford before deciding to leave his boyhood club after becoming frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities.

He has since made a name for himself in France and was given a chance with England by Carsley after Gareth Southgate stepped down following the nation's Euro 2024 final defeat against France.
