Ipswich defender Harry Clarke sets unwanted Premier League record

Ipswich suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday and on player on the Blues had a day he will want to forget in a hurry.

A 96th minute winner from Bryan Mbuemo saw the Bees complete a comeback from atwo-goal deficit and win 4-3 in an action-packed Premier League contest on Saturday that kept up the hosts red-hot home form.

The visiting side were reduced to 10 men in the 69th minute when Harry Clarke was sent off and that saw the Englishman become just the second man to put his name to an unwanted Premier League record.

As revealed by Opta, Clarke became just the second player in Premier League history to score an own goal, concede a penalty and be sent off in the same Premier League match.

He follows in the footsteps of Jan Bednarek, who did the same with Southampton against Manchester United in February 2021.

The defender also gave away a penalty, completing a trinity that no player wants

Newly promoted Ipswich would have been confident of their first victory of the league season after going 2-0 up in the first 31 minutes through Sam Szmodics and George Hirst.

But Brentford had other ideas as they struck back through Yoane Wissa and an own goal from Clarke to level matters at halftime and then led though Mbeumo´s second half penalty.

Ipswich were then reduced to 10 men with the sending off of Clarke, who had earlier scored the own goal and given away a penalty, but defied the odds to level through substitute Liam Delap's 86th minute goal, only for Mbeumo to win the game in time added on with a long range effort.
