Jamie Carragher issues Newcastle warning over Eddie Howe

Jamie Carragher has warned Newcastle that they must hold on to manager Eddie Howe amid speculation over the Englishman's future.

The 46-year-old has been linked with the job as Three Lions boss since Gareth Southgate vacated the position in July and rumours continue to swirl despite Lee Carsley having taking the role as interim manager.

Howe has been left frustrated after key positions such as centre-back and right-wing were not strengthened over the summer.

Newcastle also had to sell a couple of names and face further exits next year as they struggle to comply with PSR rules.

And former England international Carragher has urged the Magpies to do everything they can to keep Howe as they look to secure European football once again, as he spoke on Sky Sports ahead of today's Premier League clash with Tottenham.

'I feel for Newcastle in that it almost feels like this money has come at the wrong time,' he said. 'It doesn't matter now how much money you've got it's what you're bringing into your club.

'If we're being totally honest they may have to sell one of their biggest players for £100m or £120m and go again and they might have to do that for two or three years before they can bring that revenue in to keep bringing in better players for maybe a lesser price than what they have done.

'But I think a bigger problem for them right now is that if they got beaten today and they go into the international break there will be a lot of negativity.

'There's a lot of pressure from the supporters on Darren Eales the CEO, and on Paul Mitchell the sporting director as well.

'They've got to be very careful they don't lose Eddie Howe because Eddie Howe is the one person I think in most people's eyes for the England job and if that carries on the way it's going - if he's not happy - he's going to go to the England job. He will.'

Ahead of this afternoon's clash with Spurs Howe said his side could 'do better' but that the north London outfit were 'a very good team'.

He said: 'I think we've got more to come. I think we've got more to come physically and technically so hopefully today is the day to show it.

'I think we're in a positive state of mind. Today will be a difficult game but at our best we're a match for anyone.

'Harvey (Barnes) deserved to start today. He's been knocking on the door, his performances have been good, especially from the bench. Yeah, I hope he goes we;; today.

On Sandro Tonali, who is coming back from a ten-month gambling ban, he said: 'Of course there's a temptation to play him because he's a top quality player.

Newcastle had to sell a couple of players this summer, including Elliot Anderson who moved to Nottingham Forest

'It was a tough decision. I think he needs a period to build up his fitness but I also think he's ready to play. How long? That's a different question.

'We have a good squad we have a tight squad. It's not huge in depth. We're excited about the season ahead.

'Days like today are pivotal for the momentum you can build early in the season. I'm always ready to commit to the challenge of getting the best of what we have.'
