Liverpool 'pursuing mystery No 6 from outside of the Premier League'

Liverpool are pursuing a deal for a specialist defensive midfielder from outside of the Premier League, according to a report.

The Reds are the only English top-flight outfit yet to add to their roster this summer, The club has made sweeping changes in a variety of departments following the departure of Jurgen Klopp at the end of last season.

Major international tournaments have also not helped the new boss Arne Slot assess his squad ahead of the campaign that gets underway in just 11 days.

Without several of their key players, Liverpool enjoyed a superb pre-season tour of the United States, which gave fans a chance to see how the team will differ under the Dutchman.

The change was certainly notable, with arguably the most stark difference coming in the roles and responsibility of the midfield. As a result, the Reds - who were already light in the No 6 position - have reportedly moved ahead in pursuing a deal for a player in that role.

There are different requirements of a defensive midfielder in Arne Slot's system compared to Jurgen Klopp

Wataru Endo, who was a last-ditch signing last summer, could be on his way out of the club during this window

Liverpool were linked with a move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson earlier this year after his stunning season in Italy

According to The Athletic, the player that has been identified is currently playing outside of the Premier League and is a specialist No 6.

Slot has used Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch in a deep midfield roles during pre-season and, despite the return of Alexis Mac Allister, the Reds clearly feel reinforcements are need to bolster the position.

Liverpool have been linked with Atalanta midfielders Teun Koopmeiners and Ederson. In May, Tuttosport reported that the Reds were considering a move for Ederson after the Brazilian caught the attention of scouts at a recent game.

The outlet claimed that Liverpool sent scouts to Italy in order to watch Koopmeiners.
