Newcastle aiming to reach agreement over £20m deal for James Trafford

Newcastle United are looking to reach an agreement with Burnley over a £20m deal for goalkeeper James Trafford today.

Mail Sport reported earlier this week that Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell had also watched Trafford, 21, over the weekend and were considering making a renewed approach for the shot-stopper.

It comes after Eddie Howe's side had unsuccessfully tabled an offer of around £16million for the England Under 21 star back in June.

Trafford, a graduate of the Manchester City academy, had joined Burnley back in 2023 for £19million and would establish himself as Kompany's first-choice goalkeeper.

Despite that, Burnley would endure a difficult season suffering relegation back to the Championship, with Trafford being dropped by Kompany in the latter stages of the season, with the Belgian manager opting to replace him in the sticks with Arijanet Muric.

It is understood that Burnley want a fee upwards of £20m for the goalkeeper, who had been cut from England's Euro 2024 provisional squad earlier this season.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich have all been monitoring the 21-year-old shot-stopper.

Howe is believed to be an admirer of the goalkeeper, who also spent a season on loan at Bolton before arriving at Turf Moor.

Trafford, a Man City academy graduate, is admired by Howe and has been monitored by several big clubs, including Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Liverpool

Newcastle, meanwhile, have already signed two goalkeepers this summer with John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos, meaning the club now have five goalkeepers on their books, including Nick Pope, Martin Dubravka and Mark Gillespie.

While there is uncertainty over the future of Dubravka and Gillespie at Newcastle, Trafford's contract at Burnley is due to expire in 2027.
