Paul Scholes' brutal five-word verdict on Man United

Paul Scholes has given a damning assessment of Manchester United ahead of the new season.

There is hope among United fans that they are in for a better season given the changes off the pitch, as well as the signings they are making on it.

United have so far signed Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirzkee, with the likes of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford.

The Manchester United legend was a guest on The Overlap's Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, and he admitted that he didn't share the same excitement ahead of the new season that some of their supporters do.

Giving a five word verdict on the Red Devils, Scholes said: I'm struggling to get excited.'

Paul Scholes insists  he is 'struggling to get excited' over Manchester United ahead of the new season

Scholes doesn't hold the same excitement for United that some fans do after a summer of change both on and off the field

He said United were 'f***ing empty' in the middle of the pitch last season and believes Mason Mount can't get in the team over Bruno Fernandes even if he has an injury-free season

It came after co-host Jamie Carragher asked if he shared the same confidence as United fans, which Scholes quickly responded 'no'.

One problematic area for United is in midfield, as Scholes said: 'We were talking beforehand about the middle of the pitch being an area that was just f***ing empty most of time.

'Teams just breaking through us all day long. You mentioned Casemiro's legs going a little bit.

'He's never been that type of player anyway. He's never been the quickest around the pitch, he had great players around him.

'I think at the start of last year with Mason Mount, coming into the team, I think Ten Hag is quite a... he's a coach who likes to go for it.

'Then he had to change because it wasn't quite working. I think he tried to play Casemiro with Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes.

'Which two number tens, two footballers really who haven't really bothered about playing that position well so that quickly changed, Mount got injured.

'Are we going to see a fit Mount? Even if we see a fit Mount, he doesn't play instead of Bruno Fernandes and that's the only position I see him playing.

There are already injury concerns in defence with Leny Yoro already out for three months despite only joining the club

Scholes also said that goalkeeper Andre Onana still 'worries the death' out of him

Scholes is also concerned about United's injury record in defence, not helped by Yoro already being ruled out for three months after undergoing surgery on his foot.

The United legend also pointed out that he has still not been won over by goalkeeper Andre Onana, giving a brutal verdict on the Cameroonian shot-stopper.

Scholes said: 'I still think there are other areas which are a problem. You mentioned the young centre-half coming in (Leny Yoro) but he's 18, he's already got injured.

'Martinez injured a lot, Maguire got injured towards the end of last season, Lindelof, no Varane. I still worry about the goalkeeper, he's a big concern for me. A couple of the goals he conceded against Liverpool, I worry to death about him.'

United took a lot of encouragement from their FA Cup final victory back in May

United have made big changes behind the scenes with Dan Ashworth among the arrivals

United could still improve on the field with Matthijs de Ligt among potential new signings

Scholes' concerns come despite United beating Manchester City in the FA Cup at the end of last season. United finished eighth in the Premier League - their lowest finish in the Premier League era.

Part of the encouragement comes from the changes behind the scenes.

Key changes include United bringing in Dan Ashworth as the new sporting director, Man City chief executive Omar Berrada as CEO and Jason Wilcox as technical director.
