Philadelphia Union announces shock death of goalkeeper Holden Trent

The Philadelphia Union have announced the sudden and shocking death of goalkeeper Holden Trent at the age of 25.

The club confirmed the keeper's passing in a statement released on Saturday afternoon. No cause of death has been released.

'The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent,' the club said. 'While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better.

'He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends. Out of respect to Holden's friends and family, there will be no further statements at this time and ask that their privacy is respected as they grieve.'

Trent's family also released a statement of their own via their son's Instagram account.

Major League Soccer also released a statement, saying, 'A young goalkeeper with a bright future, Trent showcased determination and professionalism every day as he contributed to the close-knit goalkeeping unit at Philadelphia.

'We extend our deepest condolences to his fiancée, his family, and friends, his teammates and the entire Philadelphia Union community. MLS is coordinating with the club to provide players and family members with the resources and support they need during this tragic time.'

According to screen grabs taken on October 24 from Trent's social media accounts, he was admitted to the ICU earlier this week for unknown causes.

A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Trent played college soccer at West Virginia University and High Point University. He also played with the academies of USL clubs Charlotte Independence and South Georgia Tormenta FC.

From there, he was selected 28th overall by the Union in the 2023 MLS Super Draft.

According to the club website, Trent made six appearances for Philadelphia's MLS Next Pro team - with his most recent game time coming against New York Red Bulls II on June 26 of this year.
