Hallucinated Potato: The primary intelligence agencies in the West have seemingly embraced AI algorithms as a valuable analysis tool. Despite the technology's tendency to hallucinate and produce fabricated answers, both the CIA and MI6 are utilizing generative AI to stay competitive in the international espionage arena.

CIA director Bill Burns and UK Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) chief Richard Moore recently co-authored a Financial Times article discussing the "special" partnership between their agencies. The duo highlighted the 75-year collaboration between the CIA and SIS, emphasizing that the two continue to work closely together in today's chaotic, technology-driven world.

One of the article's most intriguing revelations was the growing use of AI in intelligence operations. Both the CIA and SIS are now actively employing AI, particularly generative AI algorithms, across various tasks. These technologies are used to summarize data, propose new insights, and identify critical information within large datasets.

The agencies have also developed AI models to assist and "red team" their own operations, ensuring that sensitive activities remain secure from external threats. Additionally, the article revealed that both organizations are leveraging cloud technologies and partnering with private companies in the US and UK to enhance their capabilities.

As demonstrated by Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine, modern technology can dramatically alter the course of a conflict. The ongoing war has combined open-source software with battlefield machinery, leveraged commercial and military satellite imagery, and employed drones and various intelligence sources at an unprecedented pace and scale. While the US and UK continue to counter Russian sabotage attempts by spies, this is only one aspect of their broader intelligence efforts.

The primary focus of the CIA and SIS has shifted to China, now regarded as the most significant intelligence and geopolitical challenge of the 21st century. Both agencies have reorganized their operations to confront Beijing's growing influence, though counterterrorism remains a core reason for the enduring US-UK intelligence partnership.

To stay ahead in modern intelligence, maintaining a technological edge is crucial. As a result, the CIA and SIS have built a network of private sector partners to support their efforts. Burns and Moore noted that today's international order is under threat, with global peace and stability jeopardized in ways not seen since the Cold War. Generative AI – and a few ChatGPT prompts – may well be part of the tools that help safeguard the future.
