Cardano's ADA token can now be used for payments at 137 Spar supermarkets across Switzerland. This new retail option is facilitated by the blockchain's integration with DFX.swiss, a fiat on- and off-ramp platform.
Utilizing DFX.swiss's Open Crypto Pay standard, customers can now spend ADA directly from their native wallets at checkout by scanning a QR code. The stores receive payments in Swiss francs, regardless of the cryptocurrency used by the customer.
Frederik Gregaard, CEO of the Cardano Foundation, described the integration as the start of a significant shift in financial transactions, aiming to make paying with ADA as commonplace as using a credit card. While most Spar locations in Switzerland and neighboring Liechtenstein are onboarded, some major cities are still pending.
Switzerland continues to be a notable adopter of cryptocurrency, with numerous businesses accepting Bitcoin. However, the Swiss National Bank has expressed reservations about adding Bitcoin to its currency reserves due to concerns over volatility and market liquidity.
