UK bankers have filed a Suspicious Activity Report regarding a £5 million personal gift to politician Nigel Farage from Christopher Harborne, a Bangkok-based British billionaire with significant holdings in Tether and Bitfinex.

The report, filed in May 2024, invites the UK's National Crime Agency to review the transfer. Farage, leader of the Reform party, states the money was an "unconditional" gift for personal security. However, the timing-just before the 2024 UK general election-has intensified scrutiny.

Multiple UK authorities are now involved. The Parliamentary Standards Commissioner is investigating whether Farage should have disclosed the gift. The Electoral Commission is examining compliance with transparency laws.

Harborne's role as a major shareholder in Tether, the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin, and Bitfinex, a prominent crypto exchange, places the transaction within a context of heightened global regulatory focus on the digital asset industry. This incident mirrors the growing influence of crypto wealth in politics, a trend already well-established in the United States.
