Olena Oblamska, a Ukrainian national also known as Lola Ferrari, has been extradited from Thailand to face federal charges in Oregon. She is accused of playing a key role in Forsage, a decentralized finance platform that prosecutors say operated as a $340 million Ponzi and pyramid scheme. Oblamska has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
Forsage launched in 2019, marketing itself as a low-risk, high-yield investment platform powered by smart contracts. In reality, according to prosecutors, it had no legitimate economic activity. New investor funds were used to pay earlier participants-the classic structure of a Ponzi scheme. The platform collected approximately $340 million from investors worldwide, particularly in emerging markets where multi-level marketing networks thrived.
Oblamska's co-defendants include Vladimir Okhotnikov, described as the alleged mastermind, along with Mikhail Sergeev and Sergey Maslakov. Okhotnikov reportedly resurfaced last year in a film featuring disgraced actor Kevin Spacey.
This criminal case marks a significant escalation from previous civil enforcement actions. It underscores that decentralization is not a legal shield-courts consistently rule that deploying code on a blockchain does not exempt anyone from securities laws or fraud statutes.
