A Maryland man has been charged with allegedly stealing over $53 million from a decentralized crypto exchange, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
Jonathan Spalletta, known as "Cthulhon" and "Jspalletta," faces charges of computer fraud and money laundering related to two 2021 hacks of Uranium Finance.
In April 2021, prosecutors allege Spalletta exploited smart contract flaws to steal $1.4 million and later $53.3 million in a second breach, shutting down the platform.
He reportedly laundered the funds through Tornado Cash and used them to buy high-value collectibles.
Law enforcement seized around $31 million in cryptocurrency tied to the case in February 2025. Spalletta, 36, could face up to 10 years in prison for fraud and 20 for money laundering.
Authorities note the charges are allegations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
