The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has filed charges against Donald G. Basile, founder of Bitcoin Latinum, and his companies, GIBF GP, Inc. and Monsoon Blockchain Corporation. The SEC alleges a $16 million crypto securities offering, tied to Bitcoin Latinum (LTNM), involved fraudulent misrepresentations and misappropriation of investor funds.
Regulators claim Basile misrepresented crucial aspects of the project, including false claims of insurance coverage and asset backing. He is also accused of misleading investors about fund usage, instead allegedly diverting millions for personal expenses such as real estate and a horse.
The Bitcoin Latinum project ultimately failed, with the token never properly launched or listed on major exchanges, resulting in significant investor losses. The SEC seeks permanent injunctions, disgorgement of ill-gotten gains, civil penalties, and a ban on Basile serving as a public company officer or director.
