The U.S. government has moved a small portion of Bitcoin tied to the infamous 2016 Bitfinex hack. Blockchain data indicates that approximately 8.2 BTC, valued at around $628,000, was transferred from a government account to Coinbase Prime. This movement follows a pattern often seen before the sale of seized assets.

The transferred coins are part of over 94,000 BTC seized by U.S. authorities, which are connected to the more than $9 billion stolen from the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex. The hacker, Ilya Lichtenstein, orchestrator of the heist, was arrested in 2022 and subsequently pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. He was sentenced to five years in prison in 2024.

His partner, Heather "Razzlekhan" Morgan, also received a prison sentence of 18 months for her role in laundering the stolen funds. Both have since been released from prison. The government's intentions for the recently moved Bitcoin remain undisclosed, but its transfer to a major exchange suggests a potential liquidation.
