Alberta is reviewing a proposal to require oil and gas companies to pay outstanding municipal property taxes before continuing operations.
The initiative stems from a new report by Rural Municipalities of Alberta and the province, highlighting that more than $250 million in unpaid taxes are owed by energy firms to rural communities.

Municipal Affairs Minister Dan Williams acknowledged that recovery is unlikely for defunct firms but said the plan could prevent future defaults.
Rural Municipalities president Kara Westerlund emphasized the need for enforceable policies to end chronic underpayment.
