Global energy prices are surging, potentially leading to higher electricity bills. Singapore's regulated electricity tariff has seen a modest increase, but a sharper rise is anticipated as higher fuel costs are reflected.
Households can combat rising expenses by opting for appliances with higher energy efficiency ratings. While these models may have a higher upfront cost, they offer substantial long-term savings. For instance, switching to a five-tick air-conditioner could save approximately S$303 annually compared to a two-tick model. Similarly, a three-tick refrigerator can reduce yearly bills by about S$59.
Major appliances like air-conditioners, refrigerators, and water heaters account for about 80 percent of household electricity consumption. Replacing older, inefficient units with energy-efficient models can yield significant savings. Experts advise considering the "life cycle cost" - the purchase price plus estimated electricity expenses over the appliance's lifespan - when making a purchase.
Singapore's Climate Friendly Households Programme offers vouchers to eligible households to purchase energy-efficient appliances, including refrigerators, air-conditioners, fans, LED lights, water heaters, washing machines, and more. Additional schemes also provide cash rewards for "greening" homes with efficient appliances.
Beyond appliance replacement, user habits significantly impact energy consumption. Using fans instead of air-conditioning, or a combination of both, can lead to considerable annual savings.
