Motorists face the prospect of higher gas prices as winter weather returns across the United States. Following recent surges linked to geopolitical tensions, new snowstorms are forecast for the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions.
The national average for regular gas currently stands at $3.63 per gallon, a notable increase from recent weeks and last year. This rise follows a significant jump attributed to oil price spikes after U.S. strikes on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Historically, severe winter weather has impacted gas prices. For instance, major snowstorms on the East Coast in January and February 2026 saw the national average gas price reach $2.87 per gallon amidst supply disruptions. Previous storms in December 2022 and March 2021 also showed fluctuations in gas prices before, immediately after, and one month following the events.
