A 2026 prospective cohort study indicates that COVID-19 booster vaccinations reduce the risk of preeclampsia by 33% in pregnant women.
Preeclampsia, a leading cause of maternal and neonatal mortality, is linked to inflammation and vascular dysfunction, factors also associated with COVID-19 infection.
The study analyzed data from over 6,500 pregnant women. Vaccination with a booster dose lowered preeclampsia risk by 58% for women with pre-existing conditions like diabetes or hypertension.
Vaccinated women also showed reduced odds of preterm delivery, maternal and perinatal morbidity, and mortality.
Researchers noted potential selection bias and residual confounding variables that could affect results, but findings emphasize vaccination benefits beyond infection severity.
