Adults hospitalized with viral lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) face serious health challenges and high costs, a study analyzing nearly 390,000 U.S. patients from January 2015 to March 2023 shows.

Research indicates that 38.1% of patients required ICU care within 30 days, with a high percentage needing immediate intensive support. Mortality rates reached 15.1%, reflecting the severe outcomes of various viral infections beyond COVID-19.

Hospital stays averaged 7 days, with costs exceeding $42,000 per patient. Peak burdens were noted during 2020-2021, but elevated readmission rates and costs persisted into 2022-2023, emphasizing the long-term impact of these infections.

These findings stress the need for improved prevention strategies and healthcare planning to mitigate the heavy toll of viral LRTD on health systems.
