Doctors Manitoba has endorsed the provincial government's proposed ban on social media and AI chatbots for children and youth. In a survey of its members, the physicians' group found that excessive screen time and social media use pose serious health risks to minors. Some doctors reported that these digital harms outweighed concerns such as substance use, poor nutrition, and injuries.
The organization is also advocating for restrictions on advertising targeting minors and for enhanced digital literacy and online safety education.
The province, led by Premier Wab Kinew, announced the ban last month. Enforcement details are still being determined, with the premier suggesting a regulatory body could oversee compliance.
