The Manitoba government is investing $1.2 million annually to integrate social workers into four Winnipeg emergency departments and urgent care centers. This initiative creates eight new positions designed to bolster mental health support and conduct critical safety assessments for vulnerable patients.

Currently, only the Health Sciences Centre maintains dedicated emergency social work staff. Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara states these professionals are essential for supporting clinical teams and improving immediate patient care outcomes within high-pressure environments.

While the Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals welcomes the expansion, the union emphasizes that hospital-based interventions must be matched with robust community resources to ensure effective long-term patient transitions.
