Dean Perryman, a 30-year-old from Stratford in East London, began his 'Empty Chairs' campaign after his best friend, Rob Clancy, died by suicide in November of last year.

Perryman started visiting pubs and restaurants wearing a bright orange hoodie, inviting strangers to sit with him. The simple act of connection is designed to ensure no one feels alone.

The program recently held its 1,000th meet-up in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex. What began in London and Essex has expanded across the United Kingdom, with events now scheduled in cities like Manchester, Leeds, and York.

The movement has gone international, with gatherings planned in Colombia, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, and Australia.

Perryman, who works for the team-building game company Chicken Rush, says the events provide a safe space, particularly for men, to share their struggles. Participants often return, forming lasting friendships in smaller communities.

With over 200 more events already lined up, Perryman hopes the campaign becomes a lasting legacy for his friend Rob, who he believes needed a similar space.
