The province of Manitoba is facing a legal challenge to its law allowing 72-hour detention for individuals under the influence of methamphetamines and other drugs. Dr. James Simm, the former chief psychiatrist for Manitoba from 2022 to 2024, has applied to the Court of King's Bench to challenge the legislation.

Premier Wab Kinew stated that the government conducted extensive research and collaborated with medical professionals to ensure the law meets high medical standards and respects Charter rights. The law, passed last year, extended the detention period from 24 to 72 hours to address the prolonged effects of methamphetamine. Critics argue the law criminalizes addiction by holding individuals against their will.
