Valentine's Day marked a profound meeting between Mark Hofeling, a liver transplant recipient, and Holly Warner, the mother of his organ donor, Benjamin Warner. Benjamin, 37, died from an overdose in August 2024, his organs donated according to his wishes.
Hofeling received Benjamin's liver after being diagnosed with stage 3 cirrhosis in July 2023. Facing a grim prognosis, a transplant was his only hope. After a challenging 10-hour surgery, Hofeling began to recover, feeling significantly better after an 11-day hospital stay.
He expressed his gratitude through an anonymous letter to Benjamin's family via BC Transplant, a message that arrived as Warner was struggling with grief around her son's memorial.
"I knew I had to respond, I had to write a letter back and I knew I had to meet this man," Warner stated.
After a year, Hofeling sent another letter detailing his progress. This led to a connection facilitated by BC Transplant. The eventual in-person meeting was described by Hofeling as a moment as powerful as waking up after surgery, knowing his life had been restored.
"Meeting Holly, Ben’s mother, and meeting Courtenay, his big sister, was really as powerful a moment as getting the call, as waking up on the other side of the surgery knowing my life had been restored," Hofeling shared.
Learning about Benjamin has aided Hofeling's healing, fostering a unique friendship and kinship with the Warner family. For Warner, the connection honors her son's memory, knowing "Mark has a part of him and I just feel that we have a connection."
