Beverly Sharp-Samograd is celebrating an extraordinary medical milestone: 50 years of life thanks to a kidney donated by her sister. Sharp-Samograd was born with a congenital kidney disorder and, after her father's donated kidney lasted only five days, she spent two years on dialysis.
At 21, her sister, Donna Lee Stavropoulos, donated a kidney in 1975. This transplant has endured for over five decades, a duration considered exceptionally rare in transplant medicine. Dr. Sika Gourishankar, director of Alberta Health Services’ Living Donor Kidney Transplant Program, notes this is a truly extraordinary outcome, attributing Sharp-Samograd's longevity with the organ to her diligent self-care and commitment to the transplant.

Despite this personal triumph, the article highlights the critical need for organ donation in Alberta. In 2025, 321 people were awaiting kidney transplants, with some patients tragically dying before receiving one. Alberta's organ and tissue donation program reported a record number of donors in 2024, leading to hundreds of transplants. Sharp-Samograd's sister passed away shortly before the 50th anniversary of the transplant. Sharp-Samograd hopes her story will inspire others to consider organ donation, emphasizing that "One organ donor can save up to eight lives."
