FDA Links Lettuce Supplier to Multi-State Cyclospora Outbreak

Federal health officials have identified the source of a multi-state parasitic outbreak. The Food and Drug Administration confirmed a sample of iceberg lettuce from supplier Taylor Farms tested positive for Cyclospora.

The parasite has caused explosive diarrhea illnesses in thousands, with at least 94 hospitalizations. The infections are linked to lettuce sold at Taco Bell locations in five states: Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.

Taylor Farms has voluntarily removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The company stated it has suspended distribution and is cooperating with the FDA and CDC.

The CDC advises consumers not to eat shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell in the affected states. Symptoms of the foodborne illness can include watery diarrhea lasting for days and sudden weight loss.
