Federal health officials announced a significant 23% decline in the national rate of opioid-related toxicity deaths in 2025. Hospitalizations linked to opioids also fell by 12% during the same period.

Officials attribute the sharp drop to expanded naloxone distribution and shifts in the illicit drug supply.

Despite the double-digit improvements, Health Canada warned that progress is uneven and fragile. The agency stressed that the fatality rate remains higher than when the public crisis first emerged a decade ago.

More than 5,600 apparent opioid-related deaths were recorded last year, averaging 15 lives lost every day. Health authorities cautioned that there is no single solution, citing the complexity of the ongoing health emergency.
