A new study reveals that while mobile apps for lupus erythematosus show potential for disease management, very few are truly patient-centered. Researchers searched the Apple and Google Play stores and identified only two apps-Lupus Log and Lupus Minder-that met rigorous inclusion criteria.
Seven physicians and five patients evaluated the apps using standard rating scales. Quality scores varied widely among physicians, but Lupus Log scored highest overall, averaging 3.91 out of 5 from doctors and 3.95 out of 5 from patients. Notably, patients reported higher technical affinity than physicians.
The findings suggest that high-quality lupus apps exist, but the marketplace remains narrow. Clinicians are advised to carefully evaluate any app before recommending it to patients.
