Dozens of geese have been found dead in Gloucester County, New Jersey, prompting an investigation into a potential avian flu outbreak. Local officials reported between 50 to 75 dead geese near Alcyon Lake, the largest cluster observed to date. Residents noted unusual lethargy and illness among the birds in the days leading up to the discovery.

Betty Park and Alcyon Park have been closed as county officials work with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to test the birds. Results are expected in days or weeks. This outbreak follows over 1,100 reports of dead or sick wild birds statewide between Saturday and Monday.

While the risk to the public is considered low, residents are urged to avoid contact with sick or deceased wildlife and to keep pets away from affected areas. The county health department is also investigating a separate report of a dozen dead birds in Deptford.
