PRAIA, Cape Verde - The World Health Organization says three people have died on a cruise ship in the Atlantic from suspected hantavirus, a rare rodent-borne illness.

The outbreak occurred aboard the MV Hondius, traveling from Ushuaia, Argentina, to Cape Verde. WHO confirmed one case of hantavirus and five additional suspected cases. Of the six affected, three have died and one remains in intensive care in South Africa.

The first victim was a 70-year-old passenger who died on board. His 69-year-old wife also fell ill, was evacuated to South Africa, and died in a Johannesburg hospital. A third victim, a 69-year-old Briton, was also evacuated to Johannesburg and is in intensive care. Their nationalities have not all been confirmed, but a source said a Dutch couple was among the dead.

WHO said discussions are underway to isolate two other sick passengers in Cape Verde. The ship is then expected to continue to Spain's Canary Islands. The MV Hondius, operated by Dutch-based Oceanwide Expeditions, can carry about 170 passengers and 70 crew. Hantavirus is typically spread through contact with infected rodents or their droppings.
