Afghan women footballers will now represent their country in official matches following rule changes by FIFA. The team, known for its activism, will use this opportunity to showcase skills and develop youth talent. While Afghan women inside the country face struggles, the diaspora team aims to be their voice, sending messages of hope and support.
FIFA's decision stems from the formation of Afghan Women United, a refugee team sanctioned by FIFA in May 2025. Although ineligible for the 2027 Women's World Cup, the team is expected to return to international play in June, potentially competing in qualifiers for the 2028 Olympics.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed pride in the journey of Afghan Women United, aiming to empower them and other member associations facing similar registration challenges. Over 80 Afghan female footballers are spread across Australia, Europe, the USA, and the Middle East, including many previously under contract before the Taliban's takeover.
Regional selection camps, hosted by FIFA, are underway in England and Australia, with a training camp planned for New Zealand in June. Afghan United Women has already played matches in 2025, securing their first win against Libya in November.
