Alysa Liu has captured the gold medal in women's individual figure skating, making history as the first U.S. woman to achieve this feat since 2002. Japan's Kaori Sakamoto secured the silver medal, with Ami Nakai taking bronze.

Liu, 20, entered the free skate in third place but delivered a stellar performance to secure the win. Her victory follows a significant legacy of American figure skaters, with Sasha Cohen earning silver in 2006 and Sarah Hughes winning gold in 2002.

Fellow American skaters also competed strongly. Amber Glenn, starting in 13th place, delivered a powerful free skate including a triple axel, ultimately finishing fifth. Isabeau Levito, 18, faced a fall early in her routine but recovered to place overall.

Liu's performance was characterized by energy and precision, earning a score of 150.20 in the free skate for a total of 226.79. Her triumphant reaction underscored the significance of her achievement.

The U.S. contingent also celebrated gold in the team skating event earlier in the Winter Games.
