Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni is minimizing the historic and political tensions surrounding his team's upcoming World Cup semi-final against England in Atlanta.
Scaloni insists the match is purely a sporting contest, dismissing any focus on the deep-seated rivalry shaped by the 1966 World Cup, the 1982 Falklands War, and Diego Maradona's infamous "Hand of God" goal in 1986.
"It's a soccer match. Period. There's nothing more to it," Scaloni stated after Argentina's quarterfinal victory. "Let's not look for anything else."
The Falklands conflict remains a sensitive diplomatic issue between the nations. The topic has surfaced during the tournament, with Argentine supporters singing chants that reference the islands.
Despite acknowledging the historical weight, Argentine forward Jose Manuel Lopez says the team's focus is professional. "It's a World Cup semi-final, a game that all of my teammates have dreamed of playing," Lopez said. "We don't need any more motivation than that."
