American sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson captured victory at Australia's Stawell Gift on Monday, winning the 120m handicap race from scratch position. The 26-year-old crossed the finish line with an adjusted time of 13.15 seconds, defeating Australian teenager Charlotte Nielsen.
Richardson, who earned silver in the 100m at the Paris Olympics and was part of the gold medal-winning U.S. 4x100 relay team, became only the third athlete to win the women's Gift from scratch since 1989. The race features athletes handicapped by ability on an uphill grass track in the Victorian town of Stawell.
The Stawell Gift has been held annually since 1878, interrupted only during World War Two and the 2020 COVID cancellation. The women's race offered a A$40,000 ($27,628) prize.
