Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia was visibly emotional after securing a 2-1 victory against the New York Mets, striking out three consecutive batters to close the game. On Tuesday night, Vesia took the mound in a high-pressure situation, a role typically not his, to preserve the win.

The game coincided with Healthcare Appreciation Night at Dodger Stadium. Among those honored were the healthcare workers who provided critical support to Vesia and his wife during a devastating period last October, when they lost their infant daughter just five days after birth. Vesia had stepped away from the team before the 2025 World Series to address this deeply personal matter.

Witnessing these healthcare professionals in the stands cheering him on, Vesia expressed profound gratitude. "Everyone up there played a very, very, very big part. [My wife] Kay and I are just so happy to be able to share today. For me to get a save, it’s unbelievable," he said during a post-game interview, pointing to the group.

During the 2025 World Series, both the Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays had offered tributes to Vesia. He later publicly announced his daughter's death, thanking both teams and the fanbase for their support. Vesia returned for the 2026 season, receiving a standing ovation in his first outing. He continues to honor his daughter with a customized glove featuring her name and birthdate.
