New York Mets starting pitcher Clay Holmes suffered a fractured right fibula after being struck by a 111 mph line drive off the bat of Yankees designated hitter Spencer Jones during Friday night's 5-2 loss at Citi Field.
Holmes remained in the game despite the break, retiring Aaron Judge with the bases loaded to finish the fourth inning. He was lifted after a walk in the fifth. X-rays later revealed the fracture. Manager Carlos Mendoza called it a 'huge blow,' noting Holmes had been a consistent bright spot with a 2.39 ERA over nine starts.
Holmes signed a three-year, $38 million contract last offseason after the Mets converted him from a reliever to a starter. The loss dropped New York to 18-26, last in the NL East.
