A Newfoundland junior hockey playoff game ended early on March 7 after three on-ice brawls resulted in 572 penalty minutes. All four goalies were ejected for fighting during the third quarterfinal matchup between the St. John’s Junior Caps and the Southern Shore Junior Breakers.
Boyd Hillier, vice-president of the St. John’s Junior Hockey League, called the incident a "black eye" and "embarrassment" to the sport. Officials suspended 18 players and coaches for a total of 53 games.
The Southern Shore Junior Breakers disputed Hillier’s claims, stating their team never intended to abandon hockey for violence.
