Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin has been granted Norwegian citizenship, clearing the path for a potential national team call-up for the 2026 World Cup.

The 30-year-old, who has resided in Norway since 2019, previously represented Russia at youth levels. His marriage to a Norwegian national and five years of residency qualified him for naturalization.

Haikin has been a pivotal player for Glimt during their domestic title wins and European campaigns. He famously saved a crucial penalty against Lazio, propelling the team into the Europa League semi-finals last season.

His new status presents a selection dilemma for Norway manager Stale Solbakken, with Haikin expected to contend with Orjan Nyland for the starting goalkeeper position. Nyland has faced limited playing time at his club, Sevilla.

According to Norwegian Football Federation General Secretary Karl-Petter Loeken, FIFA approval is required after the necessary paperwork is finalized, enabling Haikin to represent Norway.

Norway qualified for the World Cup in November, marking their first appearance since 1998. The final squad is scheduled to be announced by June 1.
