South Africa and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25. His death comes just weeks after he featured for his country at the 2026 World Cup.

Adams played in all three of South Africa's group stage matches. The team advanced to the knockout rounds before a loss to co-hosts Canada.

"It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams," South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, said. He called Adams "one of its brightest young talents."

The South African Football Players Union described itself as "devastated by the untimely passing." Adams made his national team debut in 2022.

The union stated that South African football has "lost a gifted player" whose life had "so much to offer."
