Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced sweeping regulatory reforms to prevent a recurrence of the chaotic scenes at the Africa Cup of Nations final.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said changes would strengthen trust in referees, VAR operators, and judicial bodies-but offered no specifics. The decision followed an executive committee meeting in Cairo and came amid the resignation of CAF’s general secretary.

Senegal was stripped of its 2023 Afcon title after walking off the pitch in protest over a disputed penalty awarded to Morocco. They later returned and won 1-0 in extra time. The ruling, widely condemned, is now under appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Motsepe cited collaboration with FIFA to elevate referee training and pledged alignment with global football best practices in governance and ethics.

No details were provided on how new rules will prevent similar controversies.
