Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné is recovering after successful surgery to repair a fractured tibia and fibula. Canada Soccer confirmed the procedure on June 19, one day after the injury occurred during the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Vancouver.

The 24-year-old was injured in the 51st minute of Canada’s historic 6-0 victory over Qatar at BC Place. A challenge by Qatar’s Assim Madibo resulted in the double fracture and an immediate red card. Koné waved to fans as he was stretchered off during Canada’s first-ever men’s World Cup win.

Head Coach Jesse Marsch acknowledged the significant tactical and emotional impact on the squad. Koné had been central to Canada’s midfield strategy heading into the tournament. Medical projections indicate a recovery timeline of four to five months, potentially returning him to action between October and November 2026.
