BRUGES, Belgium - Club Brugge secured a dramatic 3-3 draw against Atletico Madrid in their Champions League playoff first leg. Christos Tzolis scored a late equalizer in the 89th minute, confirmed by VAR after an initial offside call.
Brugge fought back from a 2-0 halftime deficit, only to concede an agonizing own goal in the 79th minute that appeared to cost them the lead. Despite the setback, they head into the return leg in Madrid with the scores level.
Atletico Madrid took an early lead with a penalty converted by Julian Alvarez in the eighth minute. Ademola Lookman extended their advantage in stoppage time at the end of the first half.
However, Brugge mounted a spirited second-half comeback. Raphael Onyedika pulled one back in the 52nd minute, and Nicolo Tresoldi equalized on the hour mark.
The own goal by Joel Ordonez in the 79th minute, deflecting a low ball from Marcos Llorente under pressure, seemed to put Atletico back in control. But Tzolis's low left-footed strike from Onyedika’s cross ensured the tie remains in the balance.
