Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 on a dramatic stoppage-time goal from midfielder Stephen Eustaquio. The long-range strike secured a historic first-ever advancement to the World Cup's last sixteen for the Canadian men's team.

The match in Inglewood, California was a tense, scoreless affair until Eustaquio found space on the edge of the penalty area and hammered the ball past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. South Africa, who seemed prepared for extra time, made frantic but unsuccessful efforts to equalize before the final whistle.

Canada had several close chances earlier, including a penalty appeal denied by VAR review and a shot cleared off the line. Coach Jesse Marsch praised his squad's character after the victory.

Canada will face either the Netherlands or Morocco in Houston on July 4 for a place in the quarter-finals.
